The Bookseller’s Promise
Grammar in this story
The mountain-line bookshop plans to close early tonight because the last train often has no passengers.
But the owner places a blue notebook on the counter and says, “She will come.”
The student asks who, and the owner only says they will know when the train sound gets closer.
She adds, “Don't worry, this book will find its reader.”
The rain grows heavier, and only one light is still on at the platform.
The student wants to pull down the metal gate, but the owner shakes her head and says the final page will be filled in.
When the train arrives, a young woman runs into the bookshop holding a paper box.
She says, “Grandpa always said this bookshop would definitely wait for me.”
Inside the box is the ending written by the old station master, just right to tuck into the blue notebook.
The owner leaves the light on and says, “The story will continue; only the person turning the page has changed.”
