Origin Story

From Han Feizi. A man was selling spears and shields. He boasted his shield was so strong nothing could pierce it, and his spear was so sharp it could pierce anything. Someone asked, "What happens if your spear strikes your shield?" The man was speechless. This is the origin of the word "contradiction" (矛盾) in Chinese.

When to Use This Idiom

Use 自相矛盾 when:

  • An argument doesn't make sense
