Meaning

To deceive oneself; fooling yourself into thinking others won't notice something obvious.

Origin Story

A thief wanted to steal a large bronze bell. Knowing he couldn't carry it, he decided to break it into pieces. But when he struck it, it made a loud sound. Afraid of being caught, he covered his own ears and kept hitting, thinking "If I can't hear it, no one else can either!" Of course, the neighbors heard everything and he was caught.

When to Use This Idiom

Use 掩耳盗铃 when someone:

  • Ignores obvious problems hoping others won't notice
  • Deceives themselves about a situation
  • Thinks hiding something from themselves hides it from everyone
