Origin Story

A farmer once saw a rabbit run headlong into a tree stump and die. Delighted by his free meal, he abandoned his farming and sat by the stump every day, waiting for another rabbit to appear. Of course, no more rabbits came, and his fields went to ruin.

When to Use This Idiom

Use 守株待兔 when you want to describe someone who:

  • Relies on a one-time stroke of luck instead of working hard
  • Expects the same good fortune to repeat without effort
  • Is passive when action is required
