Meaning

To ruin something by adding unnecessary details; overdoing something that was already complete.

Origin Story

During a wine-drinking contest, several men agreed that whoever finished drawing a snake first would win the wine. One man finished quickly, but seeing the others still drawing, he smugly decided to add feet to his snake. Before he could finish, another man completed his snake and claimed the prize, saying "Snakes don't have feet—yours isn't a snake anymore!"

When to Use This Idiom

Use 画蛇添足 when someone:

  • Adds unnecessary elements that spoil something good
  • Over-complicates a simple solution
  • Can't leave well enough alone
