Miss Lin drinks a bowl of soup at the alley entrance every week.

Today, because the flavor has changed, she stops after the first sip.

The owner says the ingredients and pot have not changed.

Because the soup has a little less ginger, Miss Lin first goes to the market for an answer.

The ginger seller says the shop bought its usual amount that morning.

She returns to the shop and notices a young woman in the kitchen.

The owner says quietly, “Because my daughter has just begun learning, every pot will be a little different.”

He is retiring next month but cannot bring himself to tell his regulars.

Miss Lin takes another sip and says today’s soup is delicious too.
