Is This the Same Umbrella?
Grammar in this story
Heavy rain begins suddenly, and people crowd the convenience-store entrance.
On the umbrella rack are four black umbrellas that look the same as one another.
The first customer says his handle has blue tape just like this one.
The second says her umbrella tip has a small scratch just like that one.
After checking, the clerk finds all four umbrellas have the same tape and scratches.
Everyone becomes less and less certain which one is theirs.
An auntie laughs and says every time she borrows an umbrella from the entrance, she repairs it a little.
It turns out people nearby have long treated the umbrellas as shared.
When the rain lightens, the four people each take one and leave.
The clerk looks at the empty rack and thinks: perhaps every one is like the original umbrella, and also different.
