The purpose usually comes first, then the action done to reach that purpose:

为了 + purpose, action

The purpose can be a noun, event, or verb phrase.

Usage boundary

为了 explains motivation. It is not just a general marker for every English “for.” Use it when the second part is done because of the goal in the first part.
