Pattern

Mention noun once; omit it when clear later

Core idea

Mandarin often omits a noun when it has already been mentioned and the listener can easily recover it. This keeps the sentence light and avoids unnecessary repetition.

The omitted noun is not random. It must be clear from the previous phrase, question, or shared situation.

Compare with omitted nouns after the marker

Sometimes the remaining phrase ends with , as in “mine” or “the cold one.” Other times the measure word or context is enough. In both cases, clarity comes from the earlier mention.
