Pattern

Topic, contrastive comment

Core idea

Chinese topic-comment sentences can put one item first to contrast it with another item or expectation.

The topic is what the sentence is about. The comment says what is true for that topic.

When to use it

Use contrastive topics when you want to say “as for this one...” and imply a different comment for another topic.

This is common in everyday answers, corrections, and comparisons.

Usage boundary

This is not a new particle or fixed phrase. It is a discourse use of topic-comment word order, so context matters.

Examples

Kāfēi wǒ bù hē, chá wǒ hē.

This book I have read; that one, not yet.
