Separable verbs

Recognize verb-object compounds that split when aspect markers, durations, or modifiers are added.

Pattern

Verb part + extra material + object part

Core idea

Some common Mandarin “verbs” are really verb-object compounds. Because of that structure, aspect markers, durations, and some modifiers can appear between the verb part and the object part.

These are called separable verbs because the two parts can split.

What learners often miss

Do not assume every two-character verb behaves as one solid block. When a word is built from an action plus an object, Mandarin may place extra information between the two parts.

The safest way to learn them is with full sentence patterns, especially when durations or appear.

Examples

我跟朋友见了面。

Wǒ gēn péngyou jiàn le miàn.

I met up with a friend.

他游了半个小时泳。

Tā yóu le bàn ge xiǎoshí yǒng.

He swam for half an hour.

我们明天见面。

Wǒmen míngtiān jiànmiàn.

We will meet tomorrow.

Common mistakes

Avoid

我们见面了朋友。

Use

我们跟朋友见了面。

For 见面, the person you meet is usually introduced with 跟; 面 stays as the object part of the compound.
