懂
Pattern
听 / 看 + 懂
Key words
Core idea
懂 can follow verbs such as listen, read, or study to show successful understanding.
It is a result complement: the action led to comprehension.
How it works
The first verb tells how the information comes in. 懂 tells whether understanding was reached.
This is why forms like “hear-understand” and “read-understand” are so common in Chinese.
Usage boundary
Use this pattern when understanding is the result of an action. For general ability or knowledge, a plain verb such as “understand” may be enough.
Examples
你听懂了吗?
Nǐ tīngdǒng le ma?
Did you understand what you heard?
这篇文章我看懂了。
Zhè piān wénzhāng wǒ kàndǒng le.
I understood this article after reading it.
他说得太快,我听不懂。
Tā shuō de tài kuài, wǒ tīng bù dǒng.
He speaks too fast, so I cannot understand.
Common mistakes
Avoid
我听了懂。
Use
我听懂了。
懂 follows the perception or learning verb as the result; 了 can come after the whole verb-result unit.
