Put the place before the action when saying where an activity happens.

Pattern

Subject + location phrase + action

Core idea

When saying where an activity happens, Mandarin usually puts the location phrase before the action. The place sets the scene, then the verb phrase gives the event.

This differs from English sentences like “eat at school,” where the location often comes after the action.

Word order note

The location phrase often uses plus a place. Put that phrase before the main verb.

If a sentence sounds translated from English, check whether the place has been left at the end. Moving it before the action often fixes the beginner word order.
