吗
Pattern
Statement + 吗?
Key words
Core idea
吗 can appear in a question that pushes the listener to confirm something the speaker thinks should already be clear.
This is not the neutral “yes/no question” use. The tone is closer to “isn't it...?” or “didn't you...?”
Usage boundary
This pattern often appears with a negative frame such as 不是…吗. The speaker is not simply asking for new information; they are pointing back to something expected, obvious, or previously said.
Tone note
Because this use can sound challenging, it depends heavily on context and voice. For beginner production, treat it as a recognition pattern first: useful to understand in reading and dialogue before using it freely.
