Pattern

Subject + 很 + adjective

Key words

Core idea

Mandarin adjective predicates often use before the adjective. In this beginner pattern, it often works like a linking adverb and does not always mean a strong “very.”

This is why a sentence like “I am busy” often has the shape subject plus plus adjective.

What not to copy from English

Do not add before ordinary adjectives just because English uses “am,” “is,” or “are.” Mandarin adjective predicates do not need that equating verb.

If you truly want to emphasize “very,” stress and context do the work. The written beginner pattern can look the same.

Examples

我很忙。

Wǒ hěn máng.

I am busy.

很 often links the subject and adjective without a strong very meaning.

这杯咖啡很热。

Zhè bēi kāfēi hěn rè.

This cup of coffee is hot.

老师很高兴。

Lǎoshī hěn gāoxìng.

The teacher is happy.
