Pattern

Subject + 还 + predicate

Key words

Core idea

means that a situation continues, or that something is added to what was already mentioned.

It usually appears before the verb phrase, adjective phrase, or location predicate it comments on.

Two common uses

Use for “still” when a state has not changed yet.

Use it for “also” when you add another action, item, or fact. Context tells you which reading is intended.

Word order note

is an adverb, so it does its work before the predicate. It does not move to the end of the sentence like English “still” sometimes can.

Examples

他还在学校。

Tā hái zài xuéxiào.

He is still at school.
